Individuals who meet the requirements for full registration have completed formal education and evaluation, and are authorized in Alberta to perform administrative duties, infection prevention and control procedures, laboratory procedures, chairside assisting, and any or all of the legal intra-oral skills based on formal education, national board qualifications, and/or recognized labour mobility agreements. Registered Dental Assistant practice permit holders may use the protected titles "registered dental assistant" and "dental assistant" and the initials "RDA" and "DA."
Provisional (Temporary) Registration
Individuals that have not yet met all of the requirements for full registration may be eligible for Provisional Registration to allow them to practice the profession (as authorized) while they are working toward meeting the outstanding requirements. Provisional Registration status is available to individuals that have met one of the following:
*Accreditation through the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada.
Provisional registrants are issued a Provisional Dental Assistant practice permit and are authorized in Alberta to perform administrative duties, infection prevention and control procedures, laboratory procedures, chairside assisting, and authorized intra-oral skills based on formal education and national board qualifications. Provisional registrants may only use the title "dental assistant" and initials "DA."
Provisional registration and practice permits may be renewed for up to a maximum of 365 days total. A person who is registered on the provisional register may practice only while supervised by a dental assistant registered on the general register or by a dentist, dental hygienist, denturist or other person approved by the Registrar. Supervision means on-site and able to assist. Provisional registrants will be transferred to full registration status upon completion of their final registration requirements, at no additional fee.
This category of registration is intended for dental assistants wishing to offer continuing education related to intra-oral procedures in Alberta, or for those wishing to teach dental assisting in Alberta on a temporary basis. The individual must complete an application, pay the applicable fees, and be regulated in good standing in another regulated jurisdiction, or satisfy the Registrar of having the necessary competencies to carry out the purpose for which the registration is requested.
By request, through the discipline process, or after appropriate notification, the registration of a regulated member or the membership of a non-regulated member may be cancelled. Cancelled individuals may not practice dental assisting in Alberta, or use the protected titles and initials. Malpractice insurance included with registration does not cover cancelled individuals. Cancelled individuals may apply to have their registration reinstated. Reinstatement policies and fees will apply.
Regulated members may be suspended as a result of disciplinary proceedings or for failure to comply with the requirements of registration and annual renewal, including participation in the Competence Program.
Suspended individuals may not practice dental assisting in Alberta or use the protected titles or initials. Malpractice insurance included with registration does not cover suspended individuals. Suspended individuals may apply to have their registration reinstated. Reinstatement policies and fees will apply. We reserve the right to cancel the practice permit and registration of any suspended individual.
